Exposing Venezuela Victory Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.
Computer-created images purporting to portray Venezuela's president detained after his apprehension by the United States have garnered many millions of impressions on social media.
How AI Images of Maduro Appeared Within Hours
Initial fake synthetic picture seemingly displaying him led off a plane surfaced within hours. The graphic was unpublished by any verified government accounts; rather, it was uploaded on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
We’ve checked the SynthID tool, which found the image was produced or modified with AI tools.
Additional synthetic images began to spread in the subsequent period, appearing to show additional perspectives of the leader in custody. Noticeable identifying marks on the graphics show they were posted by an Instagram account named ultravfx.
The detection tool says the further images were likewise produced using Google AI.
Real Photo Posted but Fakes Persisted
The former US president shared the first real photo of Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. However, despite the authentic image was made public, synthetic pictures kept circulating but were updated to show the grey athletic wear worn by Maduro.
Digital forensics indicate the new fake images were initially shared on TikTok by a digital art account. Again, analysis confirms the new graphics were created or altered Google AI.
